Our Vision

The Columbia Undergraduate Medical Review is a student publication dedicated to improving the accessibility of medical knowledge to the general public. We seek to educate the public about real world applications for medical findings that are highly impactful. We serve to bring awareness to leading medical research through an unbiased lens with a foundation in peer-reviewed scientific sources.

Christian Gomes

Founder, Co-Editor-in-Chief

Christian is a senior in Columbia College majoring in Neuroscience & Behavior on the pre-med track. He volunteers as a Patient Transporter at the Hospital for Special Surgery and is working on an independent research project in the Wichterle lab at CUIMC. In his free time, he enjoys playing sports, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

Ratna Sharma

Ratna is a senior in SEAS majoring in Biomedical Engineering. She works at the Cellular Engineering Laboratory where she studies correlations between osteoarthritis and type 2 diabetes. In her free time, she loves to play soccer, dance, and explore new music!

Maryam Isayeva

Maryam is a sophomore at CC, majoring in Biology on the pre-med track. She works in Dr. Jianlong Wang’s lab at CUIMC, focusing on the regulation of transcription factor ZFP281, as well as its role in cancer stemness and tumor resistance. She is an EMT and spent her summer volunteering in cardiothoracic surgery units across two countries. In her free time, she loves playing soccer, working out, reading dystopian books, and enjoying good food with friends.

Kyara Ralliford

Kyara is a senior in Columbia College majoring in Cognitive Science and Sociology. She enjoys studying the cognitive mechanisms that support socialization. Outside of the publication, Kyara enjoys a lot, but collecting fashion magazines, yoga, and knitting are some of her current favorites!

Ray Zhang

Ray Zhang is a sophomore at CC, majoring in Biology on the pre-med track. He volunteers at the Riverside Language Program, teaching English to immigrants, and works in the Williams lab, researching the connection between asthma, allergies, and African ancestry. When he’s home, Ray enjoys hiking through the Michigan wilderness and fishing on the lake shores.

Zoee Drimmer

Zoee is a junior at Barnard College majoring in General Biology on the pre-med track. She volunteers at New York Presbyterian Hospital in the Neurosurgery department and is part of John Glendinning’s lab at Columbia. In her free time, she enjoys working out, cooking/baking, thrifting, and trying new restaurants in the city!

Adel Alnatour

Adel is a senior majoring in biomedical engineering in the BS/MS express program. He is interested in developing computational models and medical devices, which he has explored both through industry experiences and in lab settings. In his free time, he enjoys solving puzzles, running, and volunteering with an Alzheimer’s group.

Kate Jang

Kate is a sophomore at CC majoring in Neuroscience and Computer Science on the pre-med track. She is a Laidlaw Scholar working as part of the K=1 project, researching the impact of nuclear radiation in the Pacific Islands. In her free time, she likes to draw, listen to music, and explore the city’s food scene.

Ashday Bangura

Ashday is a junior at Columbia College studying Neuroscience and Behavior on the pre-med track. Currently, she works in the Card Lab in Columbia’s Zuckerman Institute where she uses computational methods to explore neurological changes/trends associated with texture preferences in Drosophila. Outside of this, she enjoys exploring different cuisines, watching documentaries, and spending time with friends and family.

Jessie is a sophomore at SEAS, majoring in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. She works in the Azizi Lab, focusing on computational biology to study immune responses related to Graft versus Host Disease. In her free time, she enjoys music and exploring the city.

Amanda Zheng

Amanda Zheng is a junior in SEAS majoring in Civil Engineering. She works in the Steingart Lab where she runs experiments aimed at optimizing the fabrication of lithium-ion battery anodes and cathodes. During her free time, she likes to read, listen to music, and go on long walks around campus.

Yasmine Bonilla

Yasmine is a second-year undergraduate student at Columbia College, planning to major in Neuroscience and Behavior on the pre-med track. She works at NYU Langone’s Pre-Clinical Imaging Lab where she’s studying cerebral amyloid angiopathy in MRI imaging of squirrel monkey brains. In her free time, you can find her listening to unnecessarily loud music, learning Spanish and Arabic, or spending time with her grandma.
